Papermaking additives PAC

Polyaluminum Chloride (PAC) primarily functions as a retention and drainage aid and a cationic coagulant in papermaking. Its working principle is based on electrochemistry and charge neutralization:
Charge Neutralization: The paper furnish (a mixture of fibers, fines, and fillers) typically carries a negative surface charge. PAC, being highly cationic (positively charged), neutralizes these negative charges. This destabilizes the colloidal system, causing fine particles and fillers to aggregate.
Patch Mechanism: The high-charge-density aluminum hydro-complexes in PAC adsorb strongly onto the anionic surfaces, creating localized positive "patches." These patches can then attract other anionic particles, forming flocs.
Bridging and Sweep Flocculation: The pre-hydrolyzed polymeric species in PAC can also bridge between particles. Furthermore, under certain conditions, aluminum hydroxide precipitates can form, "sweeping" fine particles out of the suspension.
The overall effect is the formation of microflocs, which improves the retention of fine particles and fillers in the paper sheet, accelerates water drainage, and results in a more uniform and higher-quality paper.
